Being new to bass fishing competitions it was our first outing to Boondooma Dam. Our team entered the Golden Lure Fishing Comp put on by Fishing Freshwater and we had a lot to learn. The competition was based on hard bodied bibbed lures that had to be trawled and we were set with plenty of lure options. I was joined by Deb Staines from Miles and Mick Meharg from Toowoomba and with Mick’s boat and knowledge we had a great first day sitting in 4th position for most fish and 3rd position for longest Yellow Belly by the end of the day.
A couple of great Bass and one good sized Yellow Belly gave us a chance to be on the podium. The weed beds were firing with plenty of small Bass and the odd small Yellow Belly in the morning session and we spent the afternoon trawling the rock walls. It didn’t take long to hook up a couple of nice Bass and the Yellow Belly towards the end of the day.
Day 2 of the event did not work in our favour. We started off back at the rock walls with no luck and then hit deeper water to try our luck. The boats were lined up trawling the wall and we went through a variety of lure colours and sizes to try and get them to bite. It just wasn’t our day so we headed off back to camp to get ready for the presentations. We slipped down to 7th position overall but had a fantastic time and will be back for next years event with a little more experience under our belt.
